How to remove the background from product photos

Marketplaces want products on a clean white background, and shops look better with them. Here is how to shoot a photo that cuts out well, remove the background for free, and export it at the right size.

A clean background makes a product look professional and lets buyers focus on the item. Amazon requires a pure white background for main product images, and most shops and marketplaces look better with one. You don't need a studio or a designer.

Shoot a photo that cuts out cleanly

  • Plain backdrop: a wall or a sheet of card with a colour different from the product.
  • Soft, even light: near a window in daylight, without direct sun. Avoid strong shadows.
  • Fill the frame: the product should take up most of the photo, in focus, with a little space around it.
  • Phone at product height for most items, slightly above for flat ones like shoes or food.

Remove the background

  1. Open Remove background and drop in your photo.
  2. The background is removed in your browser at full resolution. Nothing is uploaded, which matters for unreleased products.
  3. Choose transparent (PNG) or white (JPG), then download.

For a whole catalogue, drop in several photos at once. Five at a time are free.

Sizes that marketplaces like

WhereWhat works well
Amazon main imagePure white background; at least 1,000 px on the longest side so zoom works
Shopify, Noon, DarazSquare images, about 2,000 × 2,000 px, all the same size across the shop
InstagramSquare 1,080 × 1,080 or portrait 1,080 × 1,350

Each marketplace publishes its own image rules and they change; check its seller help pages before a big upload. Resize finished photos in bulk with the image converter.

Fixing tricky photos

  • Glass and clear plastic: shoot against a background of a different colour, not white, so edges are clear.
  • White products: use a mid-grey or coloured backdrop.
  • Hair, fur and fluffy items: choose the Best edges model for finer detail.
