How to make a passport photo at home

  1. Take the photo. Stand about a metre from a plain white or light wall, face a window for even light, and have someone take it at eye level. Keep your face neutral, mouth closed, eyes open, glasses off.
  2. Choose it here and pick your document. The size and the head height change to that document’s rules.
  3. Drag the two lines to the top of your head and your chin. The tool scales and crops the photo so your head is the right height and sits in the right place.
  4. Download. Use the single photo for an online form, or print the 6 × 4 sheet at a photo kiosk and cut the copies out.

From the US State Department, GOV.UK, the German missions’ biometric photo guide and DGIP Pakistan, checked November 2026. Rules change: check with the office you are applying to before you print. The UK’s online application wants the uncropped photo from your phone, not a cropped one. *DGIP, NADRA and the Saudi visa platforms don’t publish these specs in a form we could find, so these rows use the sizes photo services list (visafoto.com and others). Check the upload box or the office before you rely on them.

Frequently asked questions

Will a photo made here be accepted?

The tool gets the size and the head height right, which is where most home photos fail. Acceptance also depends on the photo itself: even light with no shadows, a neutral face, eyes open and visible, nothing on your head unless for religious or medical reasons, and a recent photo. The officer decides, so read the checklist above before you print.

How do I print a passport photo at the right size?

Download the 6 × 4 print sheet and print it as a standard 6 × 4 inch (10 × 15 cm) photo at a pharmacy kiosk, a photo shop or on a photo printer. Choose actual size or 100%, never fit to page or borderless crop. Then cut along the thin grey lines. Measure one photo with a ruler before you use it.

Can I change the background to white?

Yes, tick Replace the background. It uses the same AI as our background remover, on your device. Some offices reject photos that look edited, so it is best to take the photo against a plain white or light wall and use this only to clean up a shadow or an off-white wall.

Is my photo uploaded?

No. Cropping, sizing and the background clean-up all run in your browser. Your photo never leaves your phone or computer.
